- ROG Xbox Ally (base model) features an AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor. It comes with 16 GB LPDDR5X‑6400 RAM and a 512 GB M.2 SSD.
- ROG Xbox Ally X steps up with the AI‑enhanced Ryzen Z2 Extreme CPU, 24 GB LPDDR5X‑8000 RAM, and a spacious 1 TB SSD
Both models sport the same 7″ Full HD IPS display. It delivers 120 Hz refresh and 500 nits brightness. It also features FreeSync Premium and Corning Gorilla Victus protection.
The Ally X also incorporates impulse triggers and an NPU, setting it apart as the more premium choice.
2. Designed for Comfort and Play
ASUS revamped the chassis for long-session comfort, drawing inspiration from Xbox controller ergonomics. Features include redesigned palm rests, grip texturing, familiar ABXY button layout, and Xbox-style triggers. The heavier Ally X (715 g vs. Ally’s 670 g) offers deeper immersion, though early hands-on impressions suggest weight could compromise long-term comfort/
The Verge’s preview noted the device felt “surprisingly comfortable” during sessions with Gears of War: Reloaded. However, they emphasized the need for proper support during extended play.
3. A Console-Like Experience with Windows Backbone
Both handhelds run Windows 11 Home, but boot users directly into a full-screen Xbox experience—hiding desktop clutter and centering gameplay. The new Xbox UI, built in partnership with ASUS and Microsoft, delivers:
- Full-screen interface on startup
- Easy access via the Game Bar (widgets, overlays, UI shortcuts)
- Controller-friendly multitasking and hierarchy
Under the surface, Windows provides full access to Steam, Epic, Battle.net, mods, Discord, Twitch, and more—merging console-style simplicity with PC versatility
A “verified handheld game” system (akin to Valve’s Steam Deck Verified) will guide users toward portable-friendly titles. Full Windows functionality allows seamless enjoyment of PC exclusives long supported by the ROG Ally community
4. Cloud, Remote, and Cross-Platform Play
The ROG Xbox Ally lineup embraces Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem fully:
- Xbox Game Pass integration and Play Anywhere support keep progress and save-sync consistent
- Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) enables remote streaming of select games
- Xbox Remote Play bridges into console gameplay from anywhere
Notably, Roblox will debut its handheld-optimized version at launch on these devices
5. Toward Holiday 2025 Launch
ASUS confirmed both devices will ship holiday 2025 in select regions (US, Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia, and more), with additional availability to follow in existing ROG markets
Microsoft hasn’t officially disclosed pricing yet, though leaks hint at $599 for the base Ally and $999 for the Ally X
6. The Competition and Future Outlook
Microsoft is entering an increasingly competitive handheld PC market. It joins systems like the Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch 2, Lenovo Legion Go, and PlayStation Portal.
The promise of Windows flexibility, broad game access, and Xbox-cloud integration positions these as strong rivals.
As Polygon and Wired analysts observe, 2025’s holiday season lacks a major blockbuster lineup. This makes timing ideal for a new platform with gaming depth across ecosystems.
