Sometimes you might have noticed the Windows OS(Operating system) is performing extremely slow even though you have enough RAM configured on your desktop or laptop. This issue can occur due to storage or unnecessary upgrades/program running in the background.

The one way to increase the performance and remove this slowness from the Microsoft Windows operating system is to delete the temporary files being created automatically.

1. Delete all temp files on Weekly basis.

To delete all the temp files created in your desktop/windows, follow the below action.

Step 1: Press Windows + R to open Run utility or simply go to Start and search for Run and press ok. Below dialog box will appear.

Step 2: Once you’re done performing the step 1, you will see the path(This PC/Local Disk/Windows/Temp) below with all the temp files.

Press → CTRL + A  → To select all the files and press the ‘delete’

2.  Delete local ‘Temporary’ files:

In order to delete the local temporary files we need follow the same steps mentioned above. However, just in case if there is any confusion you can use the below steps to delete all the local temporary files.

Step 1: Windows R → Search → %temp% in the Run utility.

Step 2: Once you perform the first step successfully, the below screen will appear.

Press → CTRL + A to select all the files → Press ‘delete’ on your keyboard.

It will delete all the files present in the temporary.

Note: Even if you are able to complete the above steps, some files will not be deleted or you might have to skip since it will be used by the current process.

3. Delete local temp files using ‘Prefetch’:

What is Prefetch.

Prefetch is a windows service which automatically fetches resources before an application requires it in the future. It create a cache file where it stored all the resource information. Deleting this cache files will improve the system performance. 

Follow the below setups:

Step 1: Press Windows + R to open run utility and search for ‘prefetch’. Below dialog box appears.

Step 2: Select all files or press  CTRL + A and press delete to clear the files.

Now, delete all the files from the ‘Recycle Bin’ and viola you’re good to go.

Note: The temporary file deletion is only valid for Windows operating system, irrespective of the version of Microsoft Windows you are using. Hopefully, IMO you will be using the Windows 11 and 10.
