  • ½ tablespoon Black Pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 tablespoons Coriander Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Cumin Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Turmeric Powder
  • Salt (to taste)
  • 1 small Onion
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 10-12 Garlic Cloves
  • 2 Green Chilies
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves
  • 1 Mango Pickle (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Marinate the Fish: Begin by marinating the fish pieces in a mixture of 1 tablespoon turmeric and 1 tablespoon salt. Set this aside for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse into the fish.
  2. Prepare the Masala Paste: In a grinder, combine 1 tablespoon each of yellow mustard seeds, black mustard seeds, black pepper, the onion, garlic, and mango pickle (if using). Grind these ingredients into a smooth paste.
  3. Enhance the Masala: To this paste, add 2 tablespoons coriander powder, 1 tablespoon each of cumin powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste. Mix in a little water to achieve a consistent paste.
  4. Make Tomato Puree: Grind the tomatoes separately to form a fine pure

e. Keep this tomato puree aside for later use.

Cooking the Curry:

  1. Fry the Fish: Heat mustard oil in a large pan or cauldron over high heat. Fry the marinated fish pieces on medium flame until they are golden brown. Once done, remove the fish and set it aside.
  2. Temper the Spices: In the same pan with the remaining hot mustard oil, add 1 tablespoon each of cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Wait for them to splutter, releasing their aromatic essence.
  3. Cook the Masala Paste: Add the prepared masala paste to the pan and fry it on a medium flame. This step is crucial as it brings out the depth of flavors from the spices.
  4. Add Tomato Puree: After about a minute of frying the masala, incorporate the tomato puree. Continue frying the mixture until the oil starts to separate from the masala. Make sure to cover the pan and stir occasionally to prevent the masala from sticking.
  5. Create the Gravy: Once the masala is well-cooked, add water to achieve your desired consistency for the gravy. Bring this to a gentle boil, covered.
  6. Add the Fish: Gently place the fried fish pieces into the simmering gravy. Let it cook for another 1 to 2 minutes, allowing the fish to absorb the flavors.
  7. Final Touch: Finally, sprinkle freshly chopped coriander leaves over the curry. Turn off the heat and cover the pan, letting the curry sit for one more minute to enhance its flavors.

Your Masala Fish Curry is now ready to be savored! Serve it hot, ideally with rice or Indian bread, and enjoy the burst of flavors in each bite.
